Baby Led Weaning While Traveling

Baby Led Weaning While Traveling

Don’t stress about blw while traveling

Although you might be worried about blw while traveling but the truth is wherever you are going there will be babies there that are being weaned.

There is no doubt that you will be able to find good baby led weaning travel food wherever you decide to go.

Take some baby led weaning supplies with you

If you have a fussy eater or have concerns then be sure to take some supplies with you. This is fine to do so long as it doesn’t break any customs or input guidelines so just be sure you aren’t taking in an illegal product with you.

We always travel (wherever we are allowed to do so) travel with at least a couple of days worth of Ella’s kitchens pouches and some packs of fingers foods with us. We always pick our little ones favourites so we always have something handy with us.

And without oversharing we always take some prunes with us in case the changes or flights cause digestive problems.

Research before you go

Now while babies are weaned everywhere, you may find food and supplies aren’t sold where you expect.

For instance, in Italy supermarkets aren’t the best place to go. For baby supplies pharmacies are the go to place. Here you will find things like bay rice, food pouches and other premade baby foods.

Make sure you google the location and where supplies can be found before you go.  Facebook groups are also a great way of finding these things out. And then be sure to know where the closest one is to your destination on arrival.

I’ve written these essential guides for families travelling in Italy and Spain and there are loads more out there that will be a great resource for parens who are doing baby led weaning on holiday.

Do a Supermarket run when you arrive

We will also do a supermarket run on arrival to get some of our baby’s favourite hand held food. Our little ones baby led weaning journey usually starts with fruit so we always stock up with that on arrival.

Embrace the local

Wherever you go, locals will have their own weaning traditions so why not embrace them.

Baby E has had a culinary adventure in Italy tasting rabbit and horse meat baby food and valling in during our winter city break to Stockholm, Sweden (valling is basically baby gruel which is fed to baby in winter months. Baby E had just been ill before we went to Sweden and valling helped up gain some extra weight). It’s great to embrace local food even when you are a baby!

However be sure not to introduce too many new flavours and foods at once due to allergies. Be sure to follow best practise advice on the pace and frequency of new food introduction.

Baby Led Weaning Supplies -Think about where you are going to feed

The one thing we have learnt from traveling while weaning is that not everywhere will have high chairs. Therefore if you want to do baby led weaning on holiday then be sure you pack some baby led weaning supplies for travel such as a portable high chair.

Baby Led Weaning Supplies – portable high chair

If you are looking for the best travel high chair for baby led weaning then there are few options you can consider but our favourite are the easy to pack away type like the one in the picture above.

There are some that have harder sides that are arguable more robust but are we found them difficult for traveling because who wants to be carting around a large high chair on vacation.

Therefore although not as sturdy as the other options we always used the packaway type that can fit over most chairs.

We purchased our foldaway travel high chair from JoJoMaman Bebe but there are alternative versions available on amazon like the one below.

We also use our travel pram which has a high chair function for most feeding when out.

Weaning on the go

Take some Anti-bac wipes

After Covid I am sure that everyone now travels with these as a standard however if not you will definitely want to travel use these when doing baby led weaning while traveling.

These are definitely helpful in case you do find a hair chair while on your travels.

Baby led weaning on Vacation Tip – Routine

If you have a rigid routine re feeding times, make sure you plan your day around them even when you are baby led weaning on vacation.

Think about where you are going – for instance if you are going to a museum is there a cafe you can stop in for baby’s lunch.

But at the same time don’t be afraid to go with the flow. Baby E’s most memorable meal has to be sat in St. Peter’s square being fed in her pram next to a Bernini fountain. Ok it wasn’t the easiest feed we have ever done but it certainly was memorable.

The thing about traveling when doing baby led weaning (blw travel) is that you have to think about the different places you might be doing a feed. Maybe you are traveling to a national park, or lots of museums or you may need to do a feed on a plane (if you are flying with a formula fed baby alongside weaning be sure yo check out our post for flying with formula).

Therefore you will need to think about the best baby led weaning travel food for different scenarios.

Our favourite BLW travel foods include

  • Ella’s Kitchen Pouches – usually fruit ones.
  • Pre packaged treats like biscotti and biscuits that are age appropriate are some of our favourite BLW travel foods

Be sure to check out out post on flying with baby food pouches for more tips on flying while baby led weaning.

How to make baby food while traveling

When we are traveling we tend to use pouches or things for baby led weaning that come ready to go like bananas, cucumber etc. However if you want to make your own here are our tips for how to make baby food while traveling

  • Plan in advance so you go to the grocery store knowing what your baby will ear
  • Make sure you have booked accommodation with a kitchen and fridge/freezer space so you have everything you need to make your own baby food.
  • Make sure you take your own ice cube mould with you so you can freeze and store your own food so you aren’t cooking every day.

Baby Led Weaning on Vacation – Pros

The main pros about doing baby led weaning on vacation is the ease. When traveling it is easy to be able to give a little one something off your plate. Fresh fruit and vegetables are available everywhere and with thorough washing can be used anywhere.

We used the stroller for meals a lot when we took our son to Spain! Fortunately it was easy to find baby/toddler food at El Corte Ingles, but "go local" is a good idea on the flavors... some of the baby food pouches were "orange and cookie" flavor :-P

We were away when both ours were weaning. In some ways it's easier as they're often receptive than toddlers. However I just tended to go with the local food, pouches and well anything I considered suitable really. After all, like you say, wherever you are there are babies who have been weaned so it's certainly doable. Thanks for joining us at #familyfun xx

Great tips. I'd never thought about baby food being kept in a different place. Thankfully we are past that stage now but still never go anywhere without a few of our kids' favourite snacks as a back up plan x #FamilyFun
