When we moved back to the UK, the first thing I decided to buy was a membership to the National Trust. I was determined that when I moved back to the UK I was going to make the most of all the fabulous historical sites that the UK has on offer that we sorely missed while we were expats. The first on our list – Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire.Who was Bess of Hardwick?

Hardwick Hall was home to one of my favourite historical women – Bess of Hardwick. Bess was born on the site of Old Hardwick and rose to prominence during the reign of Elizabeth I. Hardwick Hall was built as a testament to her power and wealth.

What is there to do for families at Hardwick Hall?

Old and New Hardwick Hall

One of the great things about visiting Hardwick Hall is that your entrance gets you into not one but two sites. The new Hardwick Hall but also Old Hardwick which is now a ruin  run by English Heritage. Both are great places to explore with kids.

Enjoy the gardens at Hardwick Hall

As with all National Trust properties the gardens are fantastic! We loved exploring the large grassy expanses but also looking about the beautiful landscaping. It is great to visit in summer because of all the beautiful blooms!

The playground at Hardwick Hall

As all parents of little ones will testify, if you want to visit historical sites, it is much easier to do if there is a playground involved aswell. Hardwick Hall has a great playground that will tire out little legs and allow for some serious steam to be blown off!

Hunt for fairies at Hardwick Hall

Without a doubt our little ones favourite things to do at National Trust properties is hunt for fairy doors. It is a great way of keeping a toddler’s attention as you go around the gardens!

What you need to know for visiting Hardwick Hall as a family?

• While New Hardwick Hall and it’s gardens are very accessible with strollers, Old Hardwick being a ruin will require a carrier for little ones. Carriers will also be useful if you want to explore the wider wilder grounds.
• As with all National Trust properties, there is a fab cafe on site
• For those not wanting to go to the cafe there are plenty of great picnic spot options!
