Fearless Family Travel Interview – Travelling with our kids 

We love learning about otter families travel plans and habits. As part of our monthly feature fearless family travel – we interview  other families to gain inspiration and insight about family travel around the world. This month Traveling With our Kids tell us about our how they make the most of their part time travel. 

1. What is your family travel? Full-time, part-time, digital nomads etc. 

We travel part time when our work allows us to take a break. Sometimes we only have one holiday during the year other times we have more. As we have 2 family businesses it can sometimes be a juggling act to get time to travel. 

2. How has your travel style changed since becoming a family?

 No, I wouldn’t say it has changed for me. We still do the same type of holidays that I did as a child, we also do similar days out as well. On the other hand, Nick had hardly ever been on a family holiday with his family so he has learnt to go with the flow! 

3. What was your baby(ie)’s first trip? Why did you chose to go there? What were the highlights/lowlights etc?

Big K’s first trip was when he is 16 weeks old to Austria and Germany. It had been a road trip that had been in the planning for a while so we decided to go for it. Unfortunately, my older brother passed away a month before we went so we were still trying to get our heads around this. We tried to make sure we had a good time but being first time parents and I was struggling with post-natal depression it was a pretty tough holiday. Our highlights were seeing Salzburg as it’s such a pretty destination to explore. Our lowlight would have been Big K falling ill one night and us having to call the local doctor out to help. Luckily, we had our EHIC, which meant we didn’t have a large bill to pay for. 

4. What is your favourite family travel gadget and why?

The kids tablets *hides* If it keeps them quiet for a while I think there is no problem in them using them. They can watch videos, play games or do educational apps too. 

5. What is your favourite family travel destination and why?

I think our favourite so far has been Majorca. It was such a lovely place to visit, the weather was great and the public transport was cheap so we managed to explore without hiring a car. The boys had so much fun which makes it all worthwhile. 

6. What is the most family friendly accommodation you have ever visited?

We normally go for self catering accommodation like caravans, apartments, or houses. Pretty much all of them have been great for the kids. We have just got back from Bamburgh in Northumberland and our self catering accommodation there was pretty amazing!

7. Family travel bloggers can be guilty of showing only the good stuff – what is your worst family ravel experience?

 I think as above when Big K got ill and we had to get the doctor out who spoke no English. It was so stressful and I was in such a state that I probably didn’t help at all! Oops. 

8. What are your top three tips for other families who wish to travel?

1. Go for it! It is so worthwhile and they learn so much! We always try get the boys to learn some of the local language too.

2. Try packing cubes, they really do help with packing

3. Plan and research – lists are your best friend…well they are for me! I find looking through other bloggers experiences one of the best ways to do research as they are more honest. They are going to say it as it is and let you know if somewhere isn’t child friendly. 

9. What do you wish you had known or done before starting family travel?

How the journey to your holiday destination can be part of the family holiday itself. We love road trips and find them much more enjoyable than flying. With some planning and research it can really make or break the holiday. 

10. What are your future family travel plans? 

This year is actually pretty busy for us. We have Italy in May, then I walk the West Highland Way in June with my mum, July will see us cycle down the River Danube from Passau to Vienna. August we have a family wedding in the South of England, September is a business trip to the Isle of Arran (one of our favourite places!) and finally October is a family holiday to Lake Garda in Italy. We can’t wait!
