Why visit Skansen at christmas

Why visit Skansen at christmas

Sometimes the real joy of Christmas can get lost in the commercial trappings that we have all become accustomed to. But sometimes I like to find simpler Christmas traditions and celebrations. So last year we took a pre Christmas break in Stockholm in the search of the true meaning and tradition of Chrismas. We sure found it at Skansen!

Skansen is the world’s oldest living history museum. Located on he island Djurgården in Stockholm, Skansen is an open air museum exploring Scandinavian heritage. Inside the grounds you will find replica buildings and town and even a Nordic zoo which children will love. It is so nice to visit a zoo with animals from the local environment. I am not usually a big fan of zoos but I loved the fact that all of the animals here were indigenous to the area.

What is Christmas at Skansen like?

Christmas at Skansen is all about great Christmas traditions and usually runs for the whole month of December. When we went there was a thin layer of snow of the ground which helped add to the atmosphere. Around the grounds are small bonfires to warm yourself by but perhaps my favourite thing at Skansen was the traditional carol service in the church.

Skansen Christmas Market

I couldn’t believe when I read that Skansen has had a Christmas market annually since 1903. The stalls sell food but also traditional gifts. It is a great place to do some Christmas present shopping.

Is Christmas at Skansen family friendly?

When we were at Skansen our little one was still a baby, but we saw loads of family friendly activities. From craft workshops to carolling and storytelling. It is perfect for the whole family!

We didn't make it to Skansen when we were in Stockholm last summer. I knew we'd regret it. I can imagine it has a fabulous festive vibe in winter. Thanks for linking #citytripping

I keep seeing outdoor museums like this recently - I think they're really great. I visited one in Lublin Poland and loved it... #citytripping

Sounds like a great place to visit in the run up to Christmas. I’m just starting to think I’d like to my kids on a little pre-xmas excursion to somewhere less commercial than the U.K.! #culturedkids

Sounds lovely, and a perfect place to have the true meaning of Christmas, made even more special with a sprinkling of snow, which for me is the ultimate Christmas treat! #CulturedKids
