When we settled on Anglesey for a holiday with grandparents, the first thing my mum said was we’d have to have lunch at Ellis Barrie’s place. Well living abroad I must admit I’d not heard of Ellis Barrie of Great British menu fame. A quick google soon convinced me that any foodie visiting Anglesey would be remiss not visiting the Marram Grass Cafe. So quickly I got on the phone to make a reservation!
Luckily we got the last table so be warned if you want to go book early!
Where is the The Marram Grass Cafe
I must admit when you drive up, the Marram Grass Cafe doesn’t look like your normal foodie destination. The Marram Grass restaurant is located on a camping and caravan park on the outskirts of Newborough! The one thing I would say is don’t be put off by the outside as gastronomic treats await inside!
The Marram Grass Cafe Menu
The Marram Grass menu is local and seasonable and thus changeable. The below was the menu on the day we visited.

[/caption]As you can see the menu was locally sourced with sea bass from Anglesey and local goats cheese to name but a few.
What I really loved about the menu was the home reared produce and as we drove away from the Maram Grass we saw the field of pigs belonging to the restaurant!
What we ate at the Marram Grass Cafe: The Marram Grass Review
For starters we had the courgette soup with goats cheese stuffed courgette flowers which was absolutely to die for.

[/caption]The desserts at the Marram Grass were also outstanding. I ordered the lemon tart which just so happens to be my all time favourite desert. I have to say it was one of the best lemon tarts I have ever eaten!

[/caption]My mum ordered the hazelnut and chocolate delice which was really well balanced and not too rich. Decorated with a chocolate tulle and accompanied with cherries, pistachio semolina cake and candied walnuts it was perfection on a plate.
Meeting Chef Ellis Barrie
For my mum, the highlight of the meal was not only finding out that Chef Ellis was working the pass but actually getting to meet the man himself! My mum had mentioned to our waiter at the start of the meal that she would love to meet him and he was more than happy to oblige with a kiss, conversation and a photo! It was so nice to meet a celebrity chef taking the time to spend with his customers!
What to do if you can’t get into the Marram Grass
We were lucky to get a table but if you don’t the Marram Grass has solved the problem! We were lucky enough to be one of the first customers at the Marram Grass’ new pop up (3 hours old when we visited)! The pop up run by youngest Barrie Brother – Connor serves Mussels and salads and serving drinks. I couldn’t resist sampling their newest offer by taking home two takeaway cocktails. We opted for the Lavendar Mojito and the Beetroot and Raspberry Vodka. It was the perfect end to a great foodie day!
The Marram Grass Review: Final Details
For three people to have three courses with wine and coffee it cost c. 120GBP. Overall I thought this was great value for great food especially given the amount of local and home reared and grown produce. If you would like to book in at the Marram Grass, which I would definitely recommend for anyone visiting Anglesey, remember to book early to avoid disappointment. I think big things lie on the horizon for the Barrie Brothers!
