Royal Attractions: Must Visit British Castles and Palaces Near London

The UK is about to go Royal crazy with all the upcoming wedding of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry and I love it! I love the street parties, the tradition and the pomp and ceremony surrounding the royals and one of the things I love doing is visiting Royal sites around the UK. My favorites have to be visiting British castles and palaces. Here is my list of must visit British Castles and Palaces for anyone going royal crazy this May or simply for those who love British Castles and Palaces.British Castles and Palaces

London Castles and palaces

Tower of London

Perhaps the most iconic London palace and fortress. Accessible in the centre of London and dominanting the Tower Bridge skyline. Great for fans of Richard III and Tudor period where you can learn about all the famous people who have spent time in the Tower. and for those who like their history less gruesome you can go and ogle the beautiful Crown Jewels!

You can buy your tickets in advance, including Crown Jewel exhibition here!

Kensington Palace

Current abode of William and Kate. Kensington Palace is set in beautiful grounds and hosts exhibitions my favorite all having a royal fashion slant. If you are traveling with littles then couple this with a visit to the Diana memorial Garden.

Kensington Palace can get busy so we recommend getting the Skip the Line Ticket in advance!

Palaces and Castles Near London

I love Tudor castles and palaces and for me, there is one that is the best!

Hampton Court Palace

Originally built by Cardinal Wolsey but associated most commonly with Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. You can take a fab guided tour, get lost in the Hampton Court maze or have wine from a wine fountain! I love Hampton court Palace especially when you take a boat down the river to get there!

Hampton Court can get busy so we recommend buying your tickets in advance!

You can get your entrance tickets via Viator online HERE

Leeds Castle

Leeds Castle, confusingly named as it is in Kent boasts as being the most beautiful castle in the world and it is pretty idyllic! Leeds Castle is a short drive away from London and can be a day trip in itself when you take into account all the beautiful grounds it has. Most commonly associated with Catherine of Aragon.

Windsor Castle

The castle of the moment and the perfect royal day trip from London. Accessible by train and car, Windsor Castle is a stunner! If you don’t like crowds though, avoid visiting around May in preparation for the royal wedding

After watching the latest Royal Wedding with friends from Britain, I would definitely like to see Windsor - the whole village just looked adorable. Thanks for sharing with #FarawayFiles, Erin

I must go to Leeds Castle! Hampton Court is in my backyard, so I feel very fortunate that we can even ride bikes there. It remains my favorite "royal" property, and we discovered just a couple of weeks ago that they have new multimedia guides and they changed up the Henry VIII Kitchens tour...it's still great, and yes the fire still burns in the Tudor kitchen. Your list makes me want to plan that Leeds Castle day out now. But not until after I watch the royal wedding this weekend. #FarawayFiles

We're so lucky to have so many amazing castles and palaces here in the UK. Our kids love nothing better than a day out in a castle. The Tower of London is one of their favourites. Thanks for sharing on #FarawayFiles
