I am going to start with a disclaimer – that despite the sheer number of superlatives I am about to use in this review, I promise I have no affliation to the hotel nor did I receive a complimentary stay or freebies in an exchange for this review! I paid for everything during this trip out of my own pocket but it is literally the best place I have been!
How to get to Buckingham Place Hotel Tangalle?
Buckingham Place on the South Coast of Sri Lanka, is literally the best place I have ever stayed at. So much so I am reticent to tell others about it. However unfortunately for us babies and kids aren’t allowed so we won’t be going back for a while. We recommend getting a taxi to the hotel from the airport and the hotel was more than happy to organize our transfers! Buckingham place is a couple of hours down the new highway, you reached a small village called Rekawa. As the main road ends, your taxi takes you down a dirt road, wide enough for only one car, that snakes around padi fields before eventually arriving at the gates to Buckingham Place and entering paradise.
The name is full of whimsy as is the owner, Nick, who doesn’t want stuffy guests but guests that will see the beauty and fun of life in Sri Lanka. He can be often found in the dining room, talking happily to guests with stories from his life both before and after he moved to Sri Lanka.
Check In at Buckingham Place Hotel, Tangalle
As you enter you are greeted with flowers and refreshing drinks. Check in was smooth and efficient yet personal at the same time. The service continued at this personal level throughout the stay.
The Service at Buckingham Place, Tangalle
The staff are courteous and attentive but never feels overbearing or intrusive. Perhaps the best example of this was I sneezed once around the pool and the next thing I knew a box of tissues appeared at my side.
What to do at Buckingham Place Hotel, Tangalle
The hotel is ideally situated next to a beautiful and secluded beach. Though the waters are too choppy to swim in, there is a nearby rock pool to take a quick dip in the India Ocean.
And also next door is a turtle sanctuary. The hotel kindly let us knew as we were part way through dinner that a turtle had appeared on a beach and tailored our dinner around this so we could go and see the turtle laying her eggs.
The area is teaming with wildlife. We saw peacocks, monitor lizards and monkeys all in the hotel grounds.
And any hotel with a resident horse is good with us
What is there to do near Buckingham Place Hotel, Tangalle?
You can also do some great trips from this hotel. For those who like historic then I definitely recommend a trip to the colonial fort town of Galle and the nearby Virgin Whites tea plantation. If wildlife is more your thing then you then an elephant safari at Udewalawe National Park will not disappoint. And for something a but more cultural then a visit to the Mulkirigala rock temples is sure to be illuminating!
In conclusion
Overall the service, luxury and location make Buckingham Place, in my opinion, the best hotel in the world. The only disappoint is that now we have little lady it will be a long time before we can visit again.
