A Hauntingly Beautiful Stay at Twelve Oaks Plantation Gone with the Wind

Growing up my favourite book was Gone with the Wind! I loved the strong female lead, and the descriptions of the southern US landscape which seemed so alien to me! One of the properties I remember most from reading the book is the gorgeous Twelve oaks plantantation, the home of Ashley Wilkes, one of the lead protagonists and object of Scarlett o’Haras desires! When we were road tripping around the USA and I found out that the original inspiration had been turned into a bed and breakfast I knew I had to stay there! As one of the most haunted hotels in all of Georgia though would we get a good nights sleep?

The Twelve Oaks Bed and Breakfast is so stunning from the outside with its traditional Southern architecture! A traditional antebellum home built in 1836 with white pillars and stunning stairways mean this is the quintessential Southern stay! The House is on the National Register of Historic Places and you feel feel the history when you step inside the house!

The Rooms at Twelve Oaks Bed and Breakfast

Each room at the Twelve Oaks Bed and Breakfast is different. Completely different decor and feel! And each is named after a film that was filmed in Covington at the Twelve Oaks Bed and Breakfast and the list is extensive! You may recognise it from films and television series such as The Vampire Diaries, Vacation and Sweet Home Alabama! The whole town of Covington surrounding the property is a film buffs dream known as the Hollywood of the South!

What I love about the rooms at Twelve Oaks is that they maintain the historical touches while having been completely renovated in 2012 and been fitted with all the modern luxuries that you could desire including private luxury bathrooms, remote control fireplaces in every room and flat panel TVs.

The Bathrooms at Twelve Oaks

I have to say that my favorite feature in the rooms were the bathrooms which were perfectly designed and decorated! Each bathroom was different but I particularly loved the roll neck baths and copper touches!

The Breakfast and Hospitality at Twelve Oaks

The breakfast at Twelve Oaks is different everyday and represents true Southern hospitality! We enjoyed the sausage and grits but our favorite breakfast of the stay was definitely the Southern peach pancakes! Th Southern Hospitality doesn’t end at breakfast as the hosts hold a Southern Sippin and Nibbles Hour! A great way to meet the other guests and enjoy some more of the property.

Ghosts of Twelve Oaks B&B

One of the things that we learnt during our stay was that the property is said to be amongst the most haunted in all of Georgia! The property is said to be haunted by two ghosts – The Lady of the House and The General! The Lady of the House” in Twelve Oaks is believed to have died in 1864 after losing her children and remains on the property until this day! Now while I am not a believer I have to say even I found it a little disconcerting when my toddler started to talking into empty spaces and woke us up in the middle of the night giggling! Had the Lady paid us a visit?

Overall Impression of Twelve Oaks B&B

Overall we loved our stay at the Twelve Oaks B&B! The owners have renovated the property superbly and have al the luxury touches you expect at a 5* hotel while keeping the feel of the place relaxed and personal! I loved all of the nods to the film history of the property which was one of the reasons we were drawn to the property in the first place!

If you are heading through Georgia this hotel should be on your list!
